When Oceans Meet: Musical Diversity, Environmentalism, and Dialogue in a Changing World

Vol. 7, núm. 1, 2019

Por: Priya Parrotta Natrajan

This introductory chapter surveys a variety of themes, which, in light of climate events such as Hurricane María, are undeniably urgent and instructive. These themes include: biocultural diversity, the connections between music and the environment (as expressed in a diversity of disciplines), and the communications challenges that climate change presents, at local and global scales. The chapter proposes that all of these concerns can be ameliorated through musical and environmental dialogue— in other words, through the bonds of solidarity and understanding that are forged when strangers, soundscapes and ecosystems meet.
